ESDM Parent Handbook

An Early Start for Your Child with Autism is an excellent resource we ask all parents to purchase. Affectionately referred to as the "Parent Manual", it is a helpful tool with short, easy-to-read chapters that describes the how, when and why of the various ESDM strategies.

Throughout your child's treatment, strategies and examples in the chapters of this book will be referenced during team and family trainings. Your child's treatment team also utilizes this book for training purposes.

Various, Flexible Toys

Proper play materials are an essential part of a productive therapy program. A variety of toys that allow for flexibility in play offer the most opportunity for therapeutic play and skill development.
Some examples include:
  • Basics (balls, blankets, pillows, bubbles, balloons)
  • Books
  • Building materials (blocks, duplo, lego, tinker toys, etc.)
  • Basic art supplies (paper, crayons/markers, magnadoodle)
  • Pretend play items (stuffed animals, pretend food, doll house, little people, dress-up clothes)
  • Simple games (memory, uno, go-fish, beginner board games)

Clear, Sealable Storage

Storage for materials is an important, yet underestimated aspect of play. Having toys organized into their own container supports your child's treatment team in creating positive interactions when choosing or planning activities, transitioning between play themes and cleaning up before moving on.

We typically recommend storing toys in clear, sealable containers so your child can easily view the contents but requires help to access the materials. There are many options available, including simply using plastic ziploc-style bags!

If you like the bins in the image, they are available on Amazon.
